Wellness Visits

Regular wellness visits play a crucial role in safeguarding your pet’s long-term physical health.

In conjunction with routine vaccinations, parasite prevention, and proper nutrition, these checkups enable your veterinarian to proactively address potential health issues before they arise or identify conditions and diseases during their early, typically more treatable stages. Request your pet’s wellness visit here.

Proactive, Preventative Care

Our thorough ‘nose to tail’ wellness visits at Abbey Animal Hospital include a comprehensive physical exam, routine diagnostic tests, and preventative measures like vaccinations, parasite control, and nutrition guidance.

This information helps your veterinarian establish an essential baseline of what is ‘normal’ for your pet’s health. This lets us detect and address changes immediately, improving your cherished pet’s outcome when faced with health challenges or illness.

These visits also strengthen our relationship with you and your pet, enabling our team to create a personalized healthcare plan committed to the vitality and longevity of your beloved pet.

Visiting Abbey Animal Hospital

Checking In:

Call us at (410) 256-0742 when you pull into a parking spot. Our friendly care professionals will ask you a series of quick questions about your pet, and this will complete your check-in process.

Once your veterinarian is ready, a vet assistant will escort you and your pet to an exam room within the clinic.

Checking Out:

When your appointment is finished, our friendly reception team will process your payment and make sure you have everything you need. Your vet assistant will help you and your pet back out to your car.

Note: We have kept Covid protocols in place as we discovered it was a much calmer experience for our furry friends and their families. You are welcome to accompany your pet inside with your vet assistant or wait in your car until the appointment is completed.

What to Expect During Your Pet’s Wellness Visit

Wellness visits cover your pet’s general condition, coat and skin, face and head, and internal health. Here’s what to expect:

  • Weigh the patient
  • Listen to heart and lungs with a stethoscope
  • Take his/her temperature (note: temperatures are taken rectally)
  • Examine eyes, ears, nose, feet, and genitalia
  • Examine skin and coat
  • Palpate abdomen and lymph nodes
  • Test feces (please bring a fresh sample) for the presence of worms
  • Consider any other concerns and questions you may have
  • Review any next steps needed for your pet’s personalized health and well-being treatment plan

If you are going home with any medications or treatments, our team will ensure you understand how and when they should be given. It is essential to follow the directions you get from your veterinarian and schedule any follow-up visits, testing, or vaccinations your pet needs as you check out.

New Patients

We look forward to welcoming you and your four-legged friend.

Please click here to fill out your ‘New Patient Registration Form,’ then request an appointment here, or call us at (410) 256-7240.

During your first visit, your veterinarian will go over your pet’s history and any questions you may have about nutrition, feeding, behavior, medical issues, such as medications, and future care, such as microchipping, spaying and neutering, flea and tick control, heartworm prevention, vaccinations, dental care and more.

Please remember to bring any paperwork, such as previous medical records from the breeder/rescue or prior veterinarian so that we can add these to your pet’s file.

Puppy & Kitten Care

We’ll provide a new puppy or kitten starter pack full of educational material and helpful information to make taking care of your new pet a breeze.

After you and your new family member’s first visit, we’ll make sure your follow-up visits are scheduled at your convenience.

If you have questions or concerns at any time you can request an appointment or give us a call at (410) 256-0742.

Senior Pet Care

Our senior pets now enjoy extended lifespans thanks to progress in veterinary medical knowledge, improved care practices, enhanced nutrition, and innovative therapies. This brings us great joy as pet owners but also presents unique challenges. As your pet gracefully ages, prioritizing regular physical examinations becomes increasingly crucial to uphold their well-being and ensure vitality into their latter years.

In addition to the routine wellness exams recommended for adult pets, we pay special attention to your senior companion. Age-related conditions like diminished vision or arthritis can manifest, making thorough monitoring essential. Supplementary laboratory tests provide valuable insights into your pet’s overall health, aiding us in proactive and tailored care.

Vaccinations & Preventative Care

At Abbey Animal Hospital, we prioritize preventative care to ward off common disorders and diseases, safeguarding your pet’s well-being from the start.

Our approach helps to build a robust foundation for your pet’s routine healthcare through cat and dog vaccinations, parasite prevention, and regular exams.

These elements give your pet the best chance to live a long, healthy life. Our team will work with you to create a personalized preventative care plan tailored to the specific needs of your cat or dog.

Parasite Prevention & Control

Parasites, once deemed nuisances, now pose significant health threats to pets, causing illnesses and even death. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, fleas can spread tapeworms and Bartonella, while heartworms, transmitted by mosquitoes, can lead to organ damage and death. Intestinal parasites like roundworms and hookworms also endanger pets and can be transmitted to humans.

Detecting parasites is challenging, as fleas and tiny ticks can hide, and infected pets may show no signs. Our recommended tests and examinations can identify parasites, and our expert staff provides tailored medications for control. Safeguarding your pets also protects family members.

Regular veterinary examinations and parasite testing are crucial for your pet’s well-being. Rely on our knowledgeable staff for a comprehensive parasite control program, including testing schedules, signs to watch for at home, and effective treatment options. Parasites aren’t just a nuisance; they carry severe diseases affecting your pet’s health and lifespan. Contact us today at (410) 256-0742 to ensure your pet’s protection.

Microchipping

Thousands of pets go missing annually, and traditional forms of identification, like collars and tags, may not be reliable. Collars break or tags become damaged, risking the safe return of your pet. A microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is a secure and permanent solution.

Implanted between your pet’s shoulder blades, it holds unique information and links to a national database. Veterinary facilities and shelters use scanners to read the microchip, facilitating a swift reunion if your pet is found.

Microchipping is a safe, efficient way to enhance the chances of your pet returning home. Even adult pets, including indoor ones, benefit from microchipping.

Abbey Animal Hospital offers microchips compatible with various scanners, and updating contact details is easily done online. Inquire about microchipping your pet today at (410) 256-0742.

Dentistry

Maintaining your pet’s dental hygiene is crucial, as dental issues can link to serious health problems like heart and kidney disease. Our thorough examination of your pet’s teeth and gums helps identify potential issues.

Bad breath is an early indicator of an unhealthy mouth, often caused by bacterial buildup leading to plaque and tartar. While treats and chews may help, they might lack antibacterial properties.

We provide expert advice on plaque control and dental care. Even seemingly healthy mouths benefit from regular checkups and cleanings.

Ensure your pet’s long, healthy life by prioritizing dental health.

Contact us today to discuss your pet’s dental care needs at (410) 256-0742.

Nutrition & Weight Management

From the first day you bring a new pet home to its final days, nutrition is crucial for overall health. While many rely on commercial diets, it’s essential to recognize that a pet’s nutritional needs change with age and activity level.

Specially formulated diets can manage various conditions, from kidney disease to diabetes. Our nutritional counseling services address specific dietary needs, weight management, and optimal nutrition for different life stages.

Whether your pet requires a special diet or needs to adjust its weight, our expert advice can guide you through the array of choices, ensuring your pet’s health and well-being.

Diagnostics

Ultrasound

We aim to provide state-of-the-art veterinary care, and one notable advancement is diagnostic ultrasound, borrowed from human medicine. Ultrasonography utilizes high-frequency sound waves, avoiding radiation and enabling non-invasive, painless internal imaging. It’s valuable for examining abdominal organs, assessing fetal health, monitoring pregnancy, and diagnosing and staging certain cancers.

Real-time ultrasound aids in evaluating the beating heart, detecting abnormalities, assessing blood flow, and identifying defects. Our veterinarians conduct minor ultrasound procedures, and for more complex cases, we collaborate with a top-tier traveling ultrasonographer in the region. This technology enhances our diagnostic capabilities, aligning with our commitment to delivering the highest quality medicine for our patients.

Radiology

Radiography is a vital diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine, complementing our commitment to delivering top-quality care. A radiograph, or x-ray, provides internal images of organs, bones, and structures, aiding in the evaluation of conditions such as kidney, heart, or liver disease. Painless, safe, and non-invasive, radiography uses minimal radiation, even accommodating pregnant females and young pets.

It allows assessment of organ size, shape, and position, crucial for detecting abnormalities like tumors, intestinal blockages, and bladder stones. Radiographs assist in diagnosing broken bones, chronic arthritis, spinal cord diseases, and various conditions. Our radiology service, staffed by caring professionals, ensures state-of-the-art and compassionate care for your pet, supporting accurate diagnoses.

Skilled Surgical Care

We understand that surgery can be a source of anxiety for pet owners. In our commitment to delivering top-notch veterinary care, we offer a comprehensive range of surgical services, from routine procedures like spaying and neutering to more complex surgeries.

Our highly skilled staff is dedicated to ensuring the best possible care for your pet. We prioritize patient safety, effective pain management, and the latest surgical practices to exceed your expectations. Throughout the surgical process, our compassionate professionals monitor your pet diligently, addressing any concerns about anesthesia, pain management, or postoperative care.

Upon your pet’s discharge, we provide thorough postoperative care and medication instructions. If questions arise during the recovery period, we encourage you to reach out; we are here to assist.

Whether your pet undergoes a minor or major surgery, trust that they are in capable hands, and we are committed to keeping them healthy, comfortable, and pain-free.

Behavioral Counseling

Your pet’s behavior significantly influences your daily interactions, shaping mealtimes, exercise, and downtime activities. Behavior problems not only jeopardize the bond between you and your pet but can also lead to severe consequences.

From housetraining issues to anxiety and aggression, Dr. Kroll, our resident behavior expert, combines veterinary clinical medicine, behavioral medicine, and pet training to help pets and their owners coexist comfortably and safely while restoring the essential bond between them.

Don’t endure another day of inappropriate behavior from your pet. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Kroll and let’s discuss how we can assist you. Call now at (410) 256-0742.
