July 4th Pet Safety with Dr. Jay: Fireworks, Food & Furry Friends

As we gear up for Independence Day, it’s not just the fireworks that need attention—it’s our pets, too.

While July 4th is a time for celebration, it’s also one of the most stressful holidays of the year for dogs and cats.

At Abbey Animal Hospital, we want to make sure your whole family stays safe, two-legged and four-legged alike.

Here’s what Dr. Jay recommends to help your pet stay calm and safe this holiday:

🔐 Update Those Tags & Microchips

Lost pet reports spike during fireworks season. Make sure your pet’s ID tag is legible and your microchip info is current. Not sure how to check? Give us a call—we can help.

🚪 Secure All Doors, Fences & Exits

Frantic pets may bolt unexpectedly. Check that all gates latch properly and doors close securely, especially during fireworks or backyard barbecues.

🧺 Watch the Picnic Table!

Corn cobs, grapes, bones, and greasy leftovers are common July 4th hazards. Keep food out of paw’s reach—especially while entertaining. One “oops” can lead to an ER visit.

💊 Need Calming Medications or Refills?

If your pet gets anxious during storms or loud noises, talk to us about calming supplements or prescriptions well in advance. Dr. Jay or Dr. Kuhlman can recommend the safest option based on your pet’s health history.

🧯 Fireworks Debris = Trouble

Spent fireworks contain chemicals harmful to pets. If you’ve had a backyard show (or live near one), do a post-party sweep to remove ash, wrappers, and casings your pet might sniff or chew.
